Coach J Recognized for Excellence in Coaching

Everyone at RLA knows “Coach J” is an excellent coach who works hard for our students. Now, the entire world knows too!

Lt John Ahlstedt, Robert Land Academy’s Training Officer and A Coy phys-ed teacher was recognized on September 17 during the Toronto Blue Jays Game with a Coaching Excellence Award.

The Award, presented annually by the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO) in partnership with Hydro One to celebrate National Coaches Week, recognize coaches for their unwavering dedication and support of athlete development on and off the field.

Nominated for the award by Major Krywulak, Lt Ahlstedt was one

of 15 coaches recognized this year. Recipients receive a $500 donation to their organization and were treated to VIP access at the Blue James Game.

“It was amazing,” said Lt Ahlstedt of the experience. “It was a

pretty good moment. I don’t coach for moments like that, but I will take it.”

MPP Neil Lumsden, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and

Sport was part of the awards presentation which Lt Ahlstedt said had added meaning for him since Lumsden coached him several years ago.

Major Krywulak said John’s ability to connect and empower each

of his students to reach their potential sets him apart as a true leader.

“He is patient, understanding, and empathetic, and always willing to go the extra mile for his athletes.”

In support of Lt Ahlstedt’s nomination, Major Bill Simmons noted how John’s work ethic and sacrifice have benefited the students and the Academy.

“John arrives early for practice; he stays late for practice. On his days off, he comes in to attend meets, drive athletes to games, or provide extra training opportunities,” said Simmons, noting John leads by

example and inspires our students to be better citizens.

Lt Ahlstedt coaches multiple sports at RLA including volleyball,

basketball, badminton, track and field and cross country. In his first year as the track and field coach he took two athletes to OFSAA, a first for the school. John also organizes the school’s various clubs and finds meaningful volunteer opportunities for RLA students within our community.

Typical of Lt Ahlstedt, who always focuses on our students

rather than himself, he simply said being nominated by RLA and receiving the award has been “humbling.”

Congratulations to Coach J on this worthy recognition.
