RLA Students Learn About Canoeing

Groups of boys have taken advantage of the warm weather to canoe up and down the Welland River that runs along the edge of RLA property.

The boys have travelled about 5km downstream to cook supper on stoves, they’ve travelled upstream to attack their buddies’ canoes, and they’ve travelled just looking at the turtles and various birds that take just as keen an interest in them.

Boys have had to carry canoes over log jams, have had to portage around jams, have had to empty their canoes of water when they’ve tipped, and they’ve spent time working on their steering skills.

Immediate plans include a trip to the local canal to practise canoe over canoe “T” rescues and a trip in the later fall to a near-by conservation area.
