So Many Options For Clubs at RLA

A Company Report

By Cdt. Josephson – There was nothing I liked about going to school at home. The teachers, the classmates, the schoolwork, the homework…terrible, absolutely terrible.

When I arrived at RLA almost two months ago, I thought this is just going to be a new terrible in camouflage. It wasn’t until my second day at the Academy that I heard about something new and interesting.

I was sitting in the common room of Brock Barracks reviewing recruit course material when DBar. Gagne came up to me and asked me which club I would like to be a part of.

“Clubs, what are you talking about,” I thought?

He explained that four days of the week we got to choose an activity that we wanted to participate in.

I assumed that this was only for Cadets and Recruits had to go dig trenches or fill sandbags or something terrible until they were promoted.

Not the case, my second day, I was allowed to attend the badminton club. For an hour and a half, after classes we were in Ivey Hall playing badminton with like-minded student badminton-enthusiasts.

This wasn’t terrible, it was great!

On my third day, I was waiting for DBar. Gagne to come around with the clubs’ sign-up sheet, expecting to sign up for badminton again. It was so cool that there were all-new clubs to try.

I was confused at first, but when I figured out that I can try a multitude of clubs, a different one each day of the week. This was awesome! I could go fishing on days when I wanted to fish. I could play basketball on days I wanted to play basketball. If I felt like learning how to use a bow and arrow, I could sign up for archery.

You can ask my parents, I do like to argue. Guess what…there’s a club for that too!! Debate club is fun, we’ve had some great, detailed arguments.

Some days I’m tired from Lt. Guy’s gym class, but still want play sports outside leisurely, so horseshoe club it is. When airsoft is an option and I’m able to shoot my House IC, air soft club all the way. If it’s raining and I can practice my karaoke skills in music club, I’ll be there.

If other Grade 7 and 8’s are talking about playing indoor soccer, I am too. When there’s an opening in the boxing club, I’ll have my memo ready for the ASM. I want to try all of the clubs.

I’ve already tried a lot of the clubs and there does not seem to be a bad club. Having clubs makes the day so much more enjoyable and I know that looking forward to Thursday’s club helps me get through RCAC and morning drill on Thursdays. Having clubs to look forward to helps the day go by that much better.

Having clubs right after classes makes classes go by that much faster. I can’t wait to see what new clubs come out in the coming weeks; I’ll try them all!
